How Radix Recovery Began

The story of Radix Recovery

Radix is the Latin word for root. The name was chosen because lasting recovery does not come from surface-level work. It comes from addressing addiction and the mental health conditions underneath it at the source, then helping people rebuild their lives from that foundation outward.

Radix Recovery began with the vision of Dr. Courtney Brennaman, its Founder and Board Chair. As a child, Courtney watched her father, a physician, struggle with addiction. When she was 10 years old, he sought treatment and achieved recovery. That transformation changed her family and shaped the rest of her life. The hope and healing her family experienced became the foundation for a place where other Iowa families could find the same change.

To turn that vision into a working program, Courtney brought together three organizations with complementary expertise, known as the Higley Partners. Covenant Family Solutions leads clinical operations and the day-to-day delivery of care. Behavioral Health Partners provides addiction treatment consulting, brand strategy, and outreach. Dahnovan Builders led the restoration of the historic Higley Mansion that now houses the program. In 2024, the partnership received a $2 million grant announced by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds to support development of the facility.

The Higley Mansion itself is a Cedar Rapids landmark. It served as a senior living home before sitting vacant for over two years during the COVID era. Its restoration into a 68-bed treatment center reflects the same idea at the center of recovery itself: something meaningful can be rebuilt. That is what this building now stands for, and it is what happens inside it every day.

The Treatment Philosophy

What does Radix Recovery believe about treatment?

Radix treats addiction as a disease of mind, body, and behavior, complicated by the mental health conditions that often live underneath it. Substance use and mental health are never separated, and residents are never handed off between disconnected providers. One clinical team treats the whole picture with one coordinated plan. Three words guide the work: Rest, Recover, Rebuild.

Rest

Recovery cannot begin until the body and nervous system have somewhere safe to land. Medically monitored detox is staffed 24/7 by a dedicated nursing team and overseen by physicians. The Higley Mansion environment is intentionally calm and consistent: protected sleep, nourishing meals, mindfulness, and gentle movement. Stabilization is treated as a clinical priority, not an afterthought.

Recover

Once a resident is stable, the real clinical work begins. Licensed clinicians deliver Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and Motivational Interviewing in individual and group sessions, with trauma-informed care running through everything. True dual diagnosis treatment happens here: anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder are addressed by the same team treating the substance use.

Rebuild

Sobriety alone is not recovery. Recovery is what gets built in the space where addiction used to live. Daily 12-step meetings, guided step work, and sponsorship pairing are available to every resident who wants them, alongside group therapy, family involvement, holistic wellness, and practical life rebuilding: housing plans, employment readiness, financial skills, and aftercare.

Person centered, always

Underneath all three phases is a person-centered conviction built on SAMHSA's eight Dimensions of Wellness. Two residents with the same diagnosis can need entirely different plans, and Radix builds accordingly. Where clinically appropriate, medication-assisted treatment with Suboxone and Vivitrol supports the plan. The goal is not just abstinence. It is a life that is genuinely worth protecting, and the support system to protect it.

Radix offers every level of care a person needs from the first day of withdrawal to independent, lasting recovery, inside one program with one clinical team. Nobody gets handed off. Here is the continuum.

Medical Detox and Withdrawal Management

Supervised alcohol and drug detox staffed 24/7 by a dedicated nursing team and overseen by physicians who manage withdrawal safely and humanely. Detox stabilization addresses both mental and physical health, and no one is asked to push through withdrawal unmedicated when medication is clinically appropriate, including Suboxone and Vivitrol where indicated.

Behavioral Health Partners is one of the three founding Higley Partners behind Radix Recovery. Our work spanned the full arc of the project, from the first feasibility conversations through the marketing engine that fills the program today. Here is how each phase worked.

Startup consulting and planning

The engagement began with a feasibility study and financial proforma to validate the model before construction dollars were committed. We then conducted a site visit and walkthrough of the property, helping shape the layout and flow of the renovations so the historic Higley Mansion could function as a treatment center: where detox is located, where group rooms sit, and how residents move through their day.

We helped develop the Radix name, rooted in the Latin word for root, and the logo, and we have remained in continued communication with Jacob, Courtney, and their teams to refine the philosophy and messaging: how people are actually treated at Radix, communicated clearly, so the world hears exactly who they are.

State licensing and Joint Commission accreditation

We managed the state licensing and TJC accreditation process, running it in parallel with the build itself. Radix was licensed by the State of Iowa while the building was still under construction, so opening day was a launch rather than a starting line.

Website live before license

The Radix website, brand presence, and search visibility were built and live months before the license was issued. By the time the doors opened, families across Iowa were already finding the program.

Launch with calls already coming

Radix received 40 organic calls in its outpatient launch month, March 2025, with every paid-ad-sourced call excluded from the count.
